Nissan Altima Sales Statistics and U.S. Trends
Nissan’s company-reported figures describe U.S. sales, not global registrations. The annual series shows 128,030 Altimas sold in calendar year 2023 and 113,898 in calendar year 2024, a reported 11.0% decline between those years.
| Period | U.S. Altimas sold | Reported comparison |
|---|---|---|
| CY2023 | 128,030 | Baseline year |
| CY2024 | 113,898 | 11.0% lower than CY2023 |
| Q4 2024 | 27,219 | 23.4% lower than Q4 2023 in units |
| Q1 2025 | 35,809 | 25.3% higher than Q1 2024 in units |

The fourth quarter of 2024 produced 27,219 Altima sales, down 23.4% from the fourth quarter of 2023 in raw units. Nissan also reported a 25.3% decline on its daily-selling-rate measure for Q4 2024 versus Q4 2023; DSR is distinct from unit volume because it is a rate-based comparison.
The following quarter reversed the direction of the year-over-year comparison. Nissan reported 35,809 Altimas sold in Q1 2025, up 25.3% in units and 28.6% on the daily-selling-rate measure versus Q1 2024.

The 2024 annual Altima total represented 13.7% of Nissan Division’s U.S. sales, calculated from 113,898 Altimas out of 865,938 division vehicles. This is a derived ratio from Nissan’s reported model and division totals, rounded to one decimal, and it is not a global market share.
Nissan Altima Engine, Power and Fuel-Economy Data
The 2024 U.S.-specification Altima used a 2.5-liter direct-injection four-cylinder in its standard configuration. Nissan’s brochure rated that engine at 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, while the available 2.0-liter VC-Turbo was listed at 248 hp and 273 lb-ft on its primary ratings.
| 2024 U.S. configuration | City mpg | Highway mpg | Combined or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| S/SV front-wheel drive | 27 | 39 | 32 combined |
| SR/SL front-wheel drive | 27 | 37 | 31 combined |
| SV/SR/SL all-wheel drive | 26 | 36 | Combined value not listed here |
| SR front-wheel-drive VC-Turbo | 25 | 34 | Turbo powertrain |

The mpg figures are EPA label estimates, not observed owner averages. The brochure reports 32 combined mpg for front-wheel-drive S and SV trims, 31 combined mpg for front-wheel-drive SR and SL trims, and 27 city/39 highway mpg for the S and SV front-wheel-drive configuration.
For all-wheel-drive SV, SR and SL trims, the listed estimate was 26 city and 36 highway mpg. The front-wheel-drive SR VC-Turbo was rated at 25 city and 34 highway mpg, and trim, drivetrain, fuel and driving conditions can affect real-world fuel economy.
Nissan Altima Crashworthiness Statistics
IIHS crashworthiness results are controlled test ratings and instrumented measurements rather than population injury rates. For 2024–26 Altima models, IIHS rated the updated moderate-overlap front test Marginal overall, an assessment that includes a rear-passenger evaluation.
The driver-side and passenger-side small-overlap tests apply to 2019–26 models in the cited test records. The driver-side test recorded HIC-15 of 59, neck tension of 0.9 kN, maximum Nij of 0.16 and chest compression of 19 mm.
The passenger-side small-overlap test recorded HIC-15 of 52, maximum Nij of 0.19 and chest compression of 19 mm. These are instrumented dummy measurements from named IIHS tests, not estimates of injury frequency among Altima occupants.

Nissan Altima Occupant-Injury Measurements
The updated moderate-overlap driver test for 2024–26 models recorded HIC-15 of 119, maximum chest compression of 27 mm and maximum Nij of 0.22. The test identifier was CEF2442, and the figures describe the IIHS driver dummy in that controlled configuration.
| IIHS test record | Population or dummy | Measurement |
|---|---|---|
| VTN1816 small overlap | Driver | HIC-15: 59 |
| VTN1816 small overlap | Driver | Neck tension: 0.9 kN |
| VTN1816 small overlap | Driver | Maximum Nij: 0.16 |
| VTN1816 small overlap | Driver | Chest compression: 19 mm |
| VTP1833 small overlap | Passenger | HIC-15: 52 |
| VTP1833 small overlap | Passenger | Maximum Nij: 0.19 |
| VTP1833 small overlap | Passenger | Chest compression: 19 mm |
| CEF2442 moderate overlap | Driver | HIC-15: 119 |
| CEF2442 moderate overlap | Driver | Maximum Nij: 0.22 |
| CEF2442 moderate overlap | Driver | Chest compression: 27 mm |

HIC-15, Nij, neck tension and chest compression are different instrumented measures, so the values should not be combined into one score. Their applicability also depends on the named test and model-year range shown above.
Nissan Altima Side-Impact and Lighting Statistics
The updated IIHS side test reported driver-side HIC-15 values of 562 and 667 across test configurations CES2223 and CES2216. The corresponding driver head peak-acceleration outcomes were 109 g and no contact, respectively, while maximum driver torso deflection measured 56 mm and 52 mm.
In configuration CES2223, maximum passenger torso deflection measured 26 mm. These results are reported separately by configuration and are not an average or a real-world crash rate.
The 2026 Altima headlight test measured distance to the 5-lux threshold on specified test-track edges. On the straightaway right edge, low beams reached 123.5 m and high beams reached 159.7 m.
On the 250-meter-radius left curve, low beams reached 46.8 m on the right edge, while high beams reached 65.5 m on the left edge. These are illumination distances under the IIHS test setup, not driving range or a guarantee of roadway visibility in every condition.

Nissan Altima Driver-Risk and Active-Safety Data
IIHS reports an Altima driver death rate of 105 deaths per million registered vehicle years for 2021–23 models in the United States, with a reported confidence interval of 72–138. This model-level observational rate covers driver deaths, not passenger deaths.
For crashes involving 2021–23 Altimas, IIHS reports an other-vehicle driver death rate of 64 per million registered vehicle years, with a 41–87 interval. This is a different driver population: it measures drivers of other vehicles in crashes with the model and should not be combined with the Altima driver rate.

IIHS also tested the standard vehicle-to-vehicle front-crash-prevention system for 2024–26 models. In the 31-mph centered-target test, the system avoided the collision; in the 31-mph off-center target test, it reduced speed by 24 mph, and in the 37-mph centered-target test, it also reduced speed by 24 mph.
In the 31-mph centered motorcycle-target test, the system reduced speed by 8 mph. In pedestrian crossing-child day testing, the Altima avoided the collision at 12 mph and reduced impact speed by 11 mph at 25 mph.
