Automotive Alliance Scale, Ownership and Governance Statistics

Ownership percentages are transaction or agreement measures, not interchangeable indicators of current control. The Renault Group’s 2020 registration document reported the historical ownership structure and the Alliance’s scale at that time.

Measure Figure Period and population
Nissan stake in Mitsubishi Motors 34% 2016; Nissan-Mitsubishi
Renault stake in Nissan 43.4% 2020 disclosure; Renault-Nissan
Combined Alliance sales More than 10.76 million 2018; Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi worldwide
Alliance Operating Board 4 members 2020 disclosure; Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi

The 8 November 2023 agreement changed the Renault-Nissan shareholding framework. Renault transferred 28.4 percentage points of its former Nissan shares into a French trust, while the agreement specified 15% cross-shareholdings and capped each company’s voting rights at 15% of exercisable voting rights.

The same 2023 arrangement replaced three prior Alliance instruments: the Restated Alliance Master Agreement, the Alliance Equity Participation Agreement and the 2019 memorandum of understanding. Separately, Renault Group described operations in more than 130 countries and about 106,000 employees in 2022; that is Renault Group scale, not the combined Alliance workforce.

Renault Group’s 2024 figures provide a current company-level operating baseline, while the production report separates Renault output from vehicles made for partners. These populations should not be added to the 2018 combined Alliance sales threshold.

Renault Group measure 2023 2024 Definition
Vehicles sold — 2.265 million Worldwide Renault Group sales
Vehicles produced 2,229,294 2,283,253 Vehicles leaving production lines
Employees — More than 98,000 Renault Group workforce
Production sites — 25 Excludes HORSE sites

Partner-production trends show how manufacturing relationships can move differently from total group output:

  • Renault plants produced 56,235 vehicles for Nissan in 2024, versus 72,622 in 2023, a 22.6% decrease.
  • Renault plants produced 20,028 vehicles for Mitsubishi in 2024, versus 31,689 in 2023, a 36.8% decrease.
  • Renault plants produced 32,791 vehicles for Daimler in both 2024 and 2023; Daimler is a partner-production population, not an Alliance-member figure.
  • Renault plants produced 19,943 vehicles for Renault Trucks in 2024, versus 30,397 in 2023, a 34.4% decrease.
  • Karsan in Türkiye produced 44,973 vehicles for Renault Group in 2024, versus 41,327 in 2023, an 8.8% increase.
  • Nissan India produced 52,781 vehicles for Renault Group in 2024, versus 67,266 in 2023, a 21.5% decrease.
  • eGT in China produced 32,252 vehicles for Renault Group in 2024, versus 54,119 in 2023, a 40.4% decrease.

Shared Plants and Cross-Brand Manufacturing Data

The Chennai plant illustrates the cumulative scale of shared Renault-Nissan manufacturing in India. Its milestones are cumulative rather than annual output, so they should be read separately from yearly production statistics.

Chennai measure Figure Period or cutoff
Vehicles for Renault and Nissan More than 2.8 million Cumulative through page access
Powertrain units for Renault and Nissan More than 4.6 million Cumulative through page access
Site area 240 hectares / 600 acres Current plant profile
Workforce 5,023 employees 1 December 2025
Solar power plant 2.2 MW Current plant profile

Source: Chennai Plant – Renault Group. The cumulative totals have no exact cutoff date stated on the page, while the workforce has the explicit 1 December 2025 measurement date.

The plant reached 500,000 cumulative vehicles in 2013 and one million in 2016. By 2023, it had reached one million cumulative Renault cars, a brand-specific milestone within the broader Renault-Nissan production history.

The Alliance’s modular-development ambitions were also expressed as targets. The 2020 plan targeted nearly 50% of models being developed and manufactured under a leader-follower model by 2025, while an earlier modular-design plan targeted 70% of Alliance vehicles on common platforms by 2022.

Automotive Alliance Electrification and Flexible-Factory Statistics

Ampere Douai shows how an alliance plant can combine several brands and electric models on a flexible industrial line. Renault’s 2025 disclosure listed six models or planned models associated with the site’s EV program.

Douai item Figure Status and period
Renault EVs listed 3 models 2025 disclosure
Alpine EV listed 1 model, A290 2025 disclosure
Additional Nissan and Mitsubishi EVs 2 models Being prepared for late-2025 launches
Flexible line and battery workshop investment €550 million 2025 disclosure
Plant production 50,729 in 2023; 89,527 in 2024 Ampere Douai

Source: Renault Group-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance joint projects at Ampere Douai. The late-2025 launches were planned at the time of disclosure, not reported completed sales.

The three Renault models listed were Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech and R5 E-Tech. Alpine’s A290 was the fourth listed EV, while Nissan Micra EV and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross were the two additional EV models being prepared.

Douai production increased by 38,798 vehicles between the reported 2023 and 2024 totals. That difference is a simple subtraction of plant totals, not a source-reported growth rate, and the source does not provide a product-level breakdown.

Renault Group stated that Douai production was 100% electric from May 2023 onward. This is a company statement about the plant’s production mix and should not be interpreted as a sales-share measure.

Alliance Investment, Synergies and Operating Outcomes

Alliance outcomes include estimates, plant investments and environmental operating measures, each with a different evidence status. The 2020 estimate projected up to a 40% reduction in cost and capital expenditure per model under the new arrangements; it is an upper-bound company estimate, not an audited realized saving.

The Douai project provides a disclosed investment amount: Renault Group invested €550 million in the flexible standard line and battery-assembly workshop. This figure describes the project scope and does not quantify a return on investment or a realized Alliance-wide cost reduction.

Chennai’s operational indicators provide additional measured outcomes:

  • Rainwater harvesting supplied 90% of the Chennai plant’s industrial water needs under the current plant profile.
  • More than 75% of water used daily at Chennai was recycled under the plant’s reported operational metric.
  • The in-house solar power plant at Chennai had 2.2 MW of capacity; this is installed capacity, not annual electricity generation.

Comparable Automotive Alliance and Joint-Venture Shipment Statistics

Stellantis provides a useful comparison, but its annual-report populations are not identical to Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi sales or plant production. The filing distinguishes consolidated shipments, joint-venture shipments and a combined figure, and warns that vehicles sold do not necessarily equal vehicles shipped.

Stellantis shipment population 2023 2024 Unit and geography
Consolidated shipments 6.168 million 5.415 million Worldwide
Joint-venture shipments 225,000 111,000 Worldwide
Combined shipments 6.393 million 5.526 million Consolidated plus joint ventures
North America 1.903 million 1.432 million Regional shipments
Enlarged Europe 2.814 million 2.576 million Regional shipments
Middle East and Africa 443,000 423,000 Regional shipments
South America 879,000 912,000 Regional shipments
China and India & Asia Pacific 102,000 61,000 Regional shipments
Maserati 27,000 11,000 Brand shipments

Source: Stellantis NV 2024 Annual Report and Form 20-F. These are shipments, not necessarily retail sales, and the consolidated population includes vehicles from certain joint ventures and associates.

The same annual report gives company-wide cost context rather than a pure synergy measure. Stellantis cost of revenues was €136.360 billion in 2024 versus €151.400 billion in 2023, while cost of revenues represented 86.9% of net revenues in 2024 and 79.9% in 2023.

Those financial figures belong to Stellantis consolidated operations and should not be attributed to a specific alliance project. They are included to show why shipment populations, consolidated costs and joint-venture measures must remain separately labeled.
