55 Nissan Recall Statistics: Global Trends, Regional Scale and Completion Rates

Nissan’s reported global recall actions ranged from 42 to 49 annually between FY2020 and FY2024, while recalled-vehicle totals ranged from 1.256 million to 4.795 million. The figures below combine Nissan’s company-reported global and regional tables with U.S.-focused NHTSA completion and remedy-timing data.

Key Nissan Recall Statistics

These are the most useful headline figures across the measured periods:

  • 49 global recall actions covered 3.993 million vehicles in FY2020 according to Nissan’s worldwide table.
  • 47 global recall actions covered 4.090 million vehicles in FY2021 according to Nissan’s worldwide table.
  • 46 global recall actions covered 3.490 million vehicles in FY2022 according to Nissan’s worldwide table.
  • 48 global recall actions covered 4.795 million vehicles in FY2023 according to Nissan’s worldwide table.
  • 42 global recall actions covered 1.256 million vehicles in FY2024 according to Nissan’s worldwide table.
  • North America recorded 3.270 million recalled vehicles across 21 actions in FY2020.
  • North America recorded 3.149 million recalled vehicles across 25 actions in FY2021.
  • North America recorded 2.439 million recalled vehicles across 22 actions in FY2022.

Nissan’s internal global tables count each recall measure or action as one case. Nissan also notes that its figures may differ from government data, and the regional action totals do not sum to the global action count because of the company’s reporting structure.

Fiscal year Global recall actions Recalled vehicles
FY2020 49 3.993 million
FY2021 47 4.090 million
FY2022 46 3.490 million
FY2023 48 4.795 million
FY2024 42 1.256 million

The action count declined from 49 in FY2020 to 42 in FY2024, an endpoint comparison rather than a rate or causal trend. The largest recalled-vehicle total in this five-year series was 4.795 million in FY2023, while the smallest was 1.256 million in FY2024.

FY2021’s 4.090 million vehicles exceeded FY2020’s 3.993 million. FY2024’s 1.256 million was far below the 4.795 million reported for FY2023, but these comparisons remain Nissan internal-report totals rather than fleet-adjusted risk rates.

Nissan Recall Data in Japan and North America

Japan and North America show different patterns in Nissan’s regional tables. The following figures are company-reported counts of actions and recalled vehicles for each fiscal year.

Fiscal year Japan actions Japan vehicles North America actions North America vehicles
FY2020 14 277,000 21 3.270 million
FY2021 11 504,000 25 3.149 million
FY2022 14 781,000 22 2.439 million
FY2023 13 1.164 million 22 1.546 million
FY2024 13 386,000 20 639,000

North America was the largest regional figure in Nissan’s table in FY2020, FY2021 and FY2022, with 3.270 million, 3.149 million and 2.439 million recalled vehicles respectively. Its total then fell to 1.546 million in FY2023 and 639,000 in FY2024.

Japan’s vehicle total increased from 277,000 in FY2020 to 781,000 in FY2022, then reached 1.164 million in FY2023 before decreasing to 386,000 in FY2024. These are endpoint comparisons and are not adjusted for fleet size or campaign composition.

Nissan Recall Statistics in Europe and Other Regions

Nissan reports Europe separately and groups additional markets under “Other regions.” That grouping means the figures are useful for understanding the company’s reporting categories, but they should not be treated as a single-country series.

Fiscal year Europe actions Europe vehicles Other actions Other vehicles
FY2020 11 352,000 21 93,000
FY2021 9 56,000 20 381,000
FY2022 2 0 thousand 21 278,000
FY2023 10 507,000 25 1.578 million
FY2024 14 130,000 13 100,000

Source: the five Nissan reports linked in the annual-trends section above.

Europe’s recalled-vehicle total was 352,000 in FY2020 and 56,000 in FY2021, then rose to 507,000 in FY2023 before falling to 130,000 in FY2024. Nissan reports the FY2022 Europe figure as 0 thousand, a rounded-thousand value that does not prove zero individual vehicles.

Other regions rose from 93,000 recalled vehicles in FY2020 to 381,000 in FY2021. The grouped total reached 278,000 in FY2022, 1.578 million in FY2023 and 100,000 in FY2024.

Recalled Nissan Vehicles by Region: 2020–2024 Exposure

Regional exposure changed materially across the five reported fiscal years. North America led the regional table in each of FY2020, FY2021 and FY2022, while Other regions exceeded both Japan and North America in FY2023.

In FY2023, Other regions recorded 1.578 million vehicles, compared with 1.164 million in Japan and 1.546 million in North America. In FY2024, North America again had the largest regional total at 639,000 vehicles.

The regional series should be read as reported populations, not as the share of each region’s vehicle fleet. Nissan’s grouped “Other” category also combines multiple markets, and Nissan’s annual tables are company-reported internal data.

NHTSA Nissan Recall Completion Rates

NHTSA’s 2023 Annual List Recall Completion Rates is a U.S.-focused report, not a global Nissan completion measure. It lists 27 Nissan North America campaigns covering 2,506,527 vehicles in aggregate, with completion rates observed at the report date.

Selected campaign-level observations show how completion varied across included populations:

  • Campaign 20V315 covered 1,831,818 vehicles and had a 39.8% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V020 covered 264,431 vehicles and had a 52.2% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V461 covered 138,736 vehicles and had an 87.3% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V474 covered 47,098 vehicles and had an 89.8% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V169 covered 36,141 vehicles and had a 96.2% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V471 covered 30,799 vehicles and had a 79.5% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V170 covered 15,223 vehicles and had an 88.9% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V286 covered 14,054 vehicles and had a 93.9% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V402 covered 14,276 vehicles and had an 88.5% completion rate.
  • Campaign 21V234 covered 12,943 vehicles and had a 95.8% completion rate.

These completion percentages are report-date observations, not lifetime final outcomes. They also describe the campaigns included by NHTSA, rather than all Nissan recalls worldwide.

NHTSA Nissan Remedy Timing Statistics

NHTSA’s Recall Completion Rate Report 2024 adds a different measure: the time a remedy was unavailable in selected recall reporting. The report lists Nissan’s lengthy-remedy recalls at an average of 111 days across three recalls.

Two Nissan campaigns illustrate the report’s “days since 573” measure:

  • Campaign 22V420 was listed as lacking an available remedy for 987 days and affecting 322,671 vehicles.
  • Campaign 24V700 was listed as lacking an available remedy for 158 days and affecting 25,704 vehicles.

The “days since 573” measure is not the same as days until completed repairs. NHTSA’s comparison excludes tires, child seats and equipment, and its remedy-timing population should not be presented as a global Nissan recall outcome.
