57 Nissan Production Statistics: Global Output, Regions and Manufacturing

Nissan’s global production was 3.101 million vehicles in FY2024, after 3.430 million in FY2023 and 3.381 million in FY2022. Nissan fiscal years end on March 31, and production volume is distinct from sales volume.

Key Nissan Production Statistics

The most useful headline measures are:

  • 3.101 million vehicles were produced globally by Nissan in FY2024, across Nissan’s corporate production regions.
  • 3.430 million vehicles were produced globally by Nissan in FY2023, the highest of the three reported fiscal-year totals in this comparison.
  • 3.381 million vehicles were produced globally by Nissan in FY2022, according to Nissan’s fiscal-year production volume.
  • 20.7% of FY2024 global Nissan production came from Japan, based on Nissan’s displayed regional composition.
  • 38.0% of FY2024 global Nissan production came from North America, the largest displayed regional share.
  • 8.9% of FY2024 global Nissan production came from Europe, using Nissan’s corporate regional category.
  • 32.4% of FY2024 global Nissan production came from other regions, using Nissan’s displayed “Others” category.

Nissan’s reported global output moved unevenly across FY2022–FY2024. The figures are corporate fiscal-year production volumes, not calendar-year registrations, deliveries or retail sales.

Fiscal year Global production
FY2022 3.381 million vehicles
FY2023 3.430 million vehicles
FY2024 3.101 million vehicles

The reported difference between FY2023 and FY2024 was a decline of 329 thousand vehicles, while FY2024 was 280 thousand vehicles below FY2022. These are simple differences restated from Nissan’s reported annual totals; rounded source values can create small reconciliation differences.

Nissan’s FY2024 production composition provides a view of the company’s geographic balance:

  • Japan represented 20.7% of global production.
  • North America represented 38.0%.
  • Europe represented 8.9%.
  • Other regions represented 32.4%.

These categories are Nissan’s displayed corporate production regions and should not be treated as a complete country-by-country production census.

Japan and North America Nissan Production Data

Japan and North America were two of Nissan’s largest production regions in the reported period. Japan’s output rose from FY2022 to FY2023 before declining in FY2024, while North America followed a similar pattern at a larger scale.

Region FY2022 FY2023 FY2024
Japan 597 thousand 725 thousand 641 thousand
North America 992 thousand 1.235 million 1.178 million

The year-to-year movements reported from Nissan’s regional totals were:

  • Japan production increased by 128 thousand vehicles from FY2022 to FY2023.
  • Japan production decreased by 84 thousand vehicles from FY2023 to FY2024.
  • North American production increased by 243 thousand vehicles from FY2022 to FY2023.
  • North American production decreased by 57 thousand vehicles from FY2023 to FY2024.

For FY2024, Nissan displayed Japan at 20.7% and North America at 38.0% of global production. The shares describe production composition for that fiscal year, not regional capacity utilization or market share.

Europe and Other-Region Nissan Production Statistics

Nissan’s Europe and “Others” categories complete the regional production picture in the sustainability data book. “Others” is Nissan’s corporate label and is not a single country or unified market.

Region FY2022 FY2023 FY2024
Europe 288 thousand 325 thousand 276 thousand
Other regions 1.504 million 1.146 million 1.005 million

European production declined by 49 thousand vehicles from FY2023 to FY2024, while production in other regions declined by 141 thousand vehicles over the same period. Nissan’s FY2024 composition displayed Europe at 8.9% and other regions at 32.4% of global production.

The regional figures are best read as annual production totals within Nissan’s reporting structure. They do not establish the output of individual plants, models or countries inside each category.

Nissan Manufacturing Footprint, Capacity and Cumulative Output

Nissan reported 28 automobile-production sites in 13 markets as of March 31, 2025. That count excludes plants providing OEM vehicles to Nissan, so it should not be interpreted as every facility involved in vehicles sold under Nissan’s brand.

Facility metrics add scale and operating context, but they are not interchangeable with annual company production:

  • The Yokohama Plant covered approximately 537,000 square meters and employed approximately 3,000 people as of September 30, 2025.
  • Yokohama’s stated capacity was approximately 470,000 vehicles per year, excluding overtime and holiday operation; this is a capacity estimate, not actual output.
  • Yokohama had produced more than 40 million engines since mass production began in 1935; this is cumulative engine output, not cumulative vehicle production.
  • The Oppama Plant covered approximately 1,699,000 square meters and employed approximately 3,700 people as of September 30, 2025.
  • Oppama’s dedicated wharf could store about 20,000 cars; storage capacity is a logistics measure, not production output.
  • The Tochigi Plant covered approximately 2,922,000 square meters and employed approximately 6,000 people as of September 30, 2025.

The plant profiles use approximate areas and staffing figures, while the Yokohama capacity figure excludes overtime and holiday operation. Their dates and scopes therefore differ from the FY2024 corporate production totals.

Nissan Production Compared With Global Sales Volume

Production and sales answer different questions. Production counts vehicles manufactured in Nissan’s fiscal-year reporting, while sales volume counts Nissan’s reported global sales and should not be treated as registrations, deliveries or production.

Fiscal year Global production Global sales volume
FY2022 3.381 million 3.305 million
FY2023 3.430 million 3.442 million
FY2024 3.101 million 3.346 million

Source: Nissan Motor Corporation Sustainability data book 2025.

Nissan’s FY2024 sales distribution included 461 thousand vehicles in Japan, 697 thousand in China, 1.303 million in North America, 351 thousand in Europe and 534 thousand in other regions. North America accounted for 38.9% of global sales volume and China for 20.8%.

Those sales figures provide operating context for production, but they are not a direct measure of factory output. Differences between production and sales can reflect the distinct scope and timing of the two corporate measures; the supplied data does not quantify inventory or shipment effects.

FY2024 Nissan Production Changes and Regional Operating Context

Nissan’s FY2024 presentation gives more detail on Japan production and regional retail volume. The retail and market measures below are operating context, not Nissan production totals.

Japan production was 641 thousand vehicles in FY2024 versus 725 thousand in FY2023, a reported decline of 11.5% in Nissan’s FY2024 presentation. FY2024 Japan production comprised 381 thousand domestic vehicles and 261 thousand exports; the displayed components may not sum exactly because of rounding.

  • Japan domestic production decreased 8.5% year over year in FY2024.
  • Japan export production decreased 13.5% year over year in FY2024.
  • Japan’s FY2024 total industry volume was 4.53 million units, down 1.0% from FY2023; this is Nissan’s market estimate, not Nissan production.

Regional FY2024 retail volume was reported as follows:

Region or market FY2024 retail volume Year-over-year context
North America 1.303 million vehicles Up 3.3%
China 697 thousand vehicles Down 12.2%
Europe 351 thousand vehicles Down 2.9%
Other regions 535 thousand vehicles Down 1.2%

The Europe retail scope excludes Russia where specified in Nissan’s presentation, and the other-region category follows Nissan’s presentation. Nissan also notes that its China TIV estimate includes China local brands and light commercial vehicles; TIV is therefore a market estimate, not Nissan production.
